Last weekend saw the Search for Australia’s Funniest Filmmakers competition get underway at WA’s Rottofest 2011, and in a pleasant turn of events, The Sexy Detective romped home with the award for Best Skit. Cheers, judges with impeccable taste!

A few of our sketches were nominated in the competition, one of which was listed as “Untitled” on the Rottofest website. Turns out it was this little ditty, Dinner Party. Apparently the following 36 seconds is worth $500, something we dare not argue with.

Rottofest 2011 – a weekend of comedy, film and music held on Rottnest Island off the WA coast – is home to a competition named Search for Australia’s Funniest Filmmakers (check it out here). Sexy D submitted a few entries, and according to the Rottofest website our sketches Medieval Name, If I Could Do It All Again and, erm, “Untitled” all made the grade.

We are excited as you to find out which one is Untitled. There’s also a film in the running called Coffee, which might be ours too.

Either way,  we don’t really care – thanks for the judges for their excellent taste! Rottofest 2011 is on this weekend starting September 3, and the schedule indicates there are film sketch heats on the Saturday and finals on the Sunday. If any WA-siders are going along, be sure to laugh and cheer when our skits come on!

Agatha Holmes is the drug-addled detective honour-bound to protect the British Isles from murder most foul. Following on from a warmly received 2010 outing, Impromafia’s favourite detective returns aboard a 1920s luxury cruise liner for a six show season of new crimes. Every show is completely unique, as each audience member nominates a murder weapon, a tell-tale clue and their choice of killer via secret ballot.

If you’ve ever wanted to see Luke “Big Sexy” Allan die (haven’t we all?) here’s your chance! Pop in on night one, Thursday the 4th, and bay for his blood. You can even nominate a gruesome method for his ending. But if the thought of Luke “Big Sexy” Allan carking it saddens you to your very core, skip night one and make the next five shows from August 5 to 13, Thursday to Saturday. We shall never speak of him again.

It had been a big week so far filled with plenty of preparations and lots of running around. Last night marked the Wild West Comedy Festival’s opening night gala, at which we had the pleasure of performing A Simple Case of Misunderstanding (AKA the Sex Kitten sketch) to a 1,000 strong crowd of Perthians (Perthites? Perth-siders?). Turns out they dig jokes about bestiality too. Ah, bestilaity – the universal meeting point of comedy.

We got the chance to meet some of the other comics that are making up the wonderfully diverse 2011 lineup. Amongst them was the super charming Tim Ferguson who, upon taking to the stage for his 10 minute spot, encouraged the crowd to see our show because he “met the guy with the moustache on the poster backstage and he is just as awesome in real life.” Tim Ferguson clearly rocks.

But this is all just preamble – the main show starts tonight at 7pm at Lazy Susan’s Comedy Den. Perthians, Perthites and Perth-siders alike, come along, tell your friends and bring your laughing boxes. We would love to meet you!

War has reached the denizens of St Love Hospital in Prognosis: Death! Delirium. Expect all the usual wall-to-wall gore, blood, guts and romantic tension in this long form improvised comedy.

Even better, expect to see not one, two or even three Sexy Detective members on stage – there’s four of the buggers. Come on the right night, and the other two might even be in the audience.

All that, plus it’s bloody entertaining. Pun unintended, but permitted.

This May, The Sexy Detective is bringing the Stray Cats and Show Rats revue to the fest, now in a leaner, tighter 60 minute format. Stray Cats and Show Rats was a big hit with Brisbane punters in October 2010, and Perthians can expect a distinctive, hilarious mix of stage and film comedy skits as the Sexy D team get in touch with their inner animal.

There are four big performances from May 19 – 22, plus you can catch The Sexy Detective performing at the opening night gala on May the 18th!

We’re pleased as punch to cross border lines for the first time and play before our most westerly cousins. For those of you who have friends and family in Perth, let them know about The Sexy Detective’s well-oiled comedy machine. For those of you who are in Perth, we hope to see you there!

The Sexy Detective’s Dave negotiated his way through a very tricky semi final last Wednesday night filled with plenty of talented comedians, and squeaked in with a placement in the finals this coming Wednesday the 23rd! The winner gets a ticket to the Grand Final at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, so stakes are high.

It’s going to be a huge night, and your muscular and robust support would be very much appreciated. If you’re keen to see a bit of sketch comedy in the Raw comp in the form of Sexy D’s Video Will skit, come along and lend us your laughing pipes!

Dave’s 2011 foray into the Raw Comedy festival has, to date at least, proven successful! He’s made it through the semi final on this Wednesday at 8pm at The Sit Down Comedy Club.

If you’re keen to support – or if you’re reluctant to support but will be dragged along by a friend, family member or co-worker – we recommend booking tickets in advance, as apparently these Raw semi final things attract quite a crowd. We also recommend that when you watch the sketch, you laugh.

UPDATE: A little bird tells me that Sexy D’s Mike Skillz has also made the semis with his A grade original stand up stylings. Check him out on Tuesday the 15th!
